Sweet, juicy cherries covered in smooth chocolate make a delicious homemade treat. They’re easy to prepare and perfect for holidays, parties, or gifting.
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh or maraschino cherries, pitted
- 1½ cups chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil or shortening
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
- 1–2 tablespoons milk or cream
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Cherries
Drain the cherries well and pat them completely dry with paper towels. Moisture can prevent the chocolate from sticking properly.
2. Make the Filling
Mix powdered sugar, softened butter, vanilla, and enough milk or cream to create a soft, workable filling.
3. Coat the Cherries
Wrap a small amount of filling around each cherry and place them on a parchment-lined tray. Chill for about 20–30 minutes.
4. Melt the Chocolate
Melt the chocolate with coconut oil in the microwave in short intervals, stirring between each one, until smooth.
5. Dip
Dip each cherry into the melted chocolate, allowing the excess to drip off. Place them back on the parchment paper.
6. Chill and Serve
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is firm.
Tips for Perfect Chocolate Covered Cherries
- Dry the cherries thoroughly before dipping.
- Don’t overheat the chocolate.
- Keep the finished cherries refrigerated.
- For extra flavor, use dark, milk, or white chocolate.
